WHAT IS HEMP PROTEIN POWDER?

Hemp protein powder harnesses the protein found in hemp seeds. There are many benefits of the hemp plant and hemp leaf, but one of my favorites is the nutritional perks. Depending on how brands manufacture hemp protein, the powder can contain up to 64.5% protein, with the remaining 35.5% as other important necessities, like fiber and healthy fat. Bonus: hemp protein powder limits the THC! So, basically, you get the health benefits without the feeling of being high.

Hemp seeds and their products, including hemp oil.

Like the protein content above, one manufacturer demonstrates how many other essential nutrients make up hemp protein powders. So one bag of powder may contain up to 41% fiber, 48.5% carbohydrates, and 15% fats.

Some powders have less fat, fiber, and carbohydrates than others, so if you’re looking for a low-fat hemp protein powder, for example, you can easily find one.

MANUFACTURING PROCESS

Hemp seeds alone contain lots of nutrients, which is why hemp protein powder is becoming more and more popular. The seeds have up to 35% oil, 25% protein, 30% carbohydrates, and 15% fiber. The rest includes important nutrients like phosphorus, potassium, magnesium, calcium, iron, and zinc. But when manufactured, companies extract the oil and isolate the protein, creating different products, including hemp protein isolate (powder).

HEMP PROTEIN POWDER BENEFITS

Besides the perk of consuming a pure plant-based protein, one study in particular highlights other hemp protein powder benefits:

  • It gives you the aminos. When you eat hemp protein, you benefit from 22 amino acids, which are important for your muscles and energy levels when working out.
  • You can easily digest it. Hemp protein is just as digestible as other protein powders, so it won’t hurt your tummy.
  • It won’t cause an allergic reaction. Hemp seeds are a low-allergen food, so even if you suffer from food allergies, those triggers go away during the manufacturing process!
  • It’s anti-everything (in a good way). Hemp protein is chock-full of antioxidants, antihypertensive, antimicrobial, antithrombotic, and immunomodulatory benefits.

So you can see why people sing hemp protein’s praises!

Because hemp powder is so high in fiber, it’s also known to aid in weight loss and help people maintain a healthy weight. But besides weight management, other hemp protein powder benefits include:

  • Athletic Performance. Studies suggest that the amino acids found in hemp powder speed up muscle repair, which is great for athletic recovery. It also showed evidence of reducing soreness and increasing stamina.
  • Cardiovascular Health. There are many hemp protein powder benefits when it comes to your heart.
    • Hemp protein lowers cholesterol.
    • The antioxidants found in hemp powder protect blood vessels and cell membranes.
    • Hemp protein powder can prevent and reduce high blood pressure.
  • Kidney Function. Other studies show that hemp protein can help reduce kidney damage, preventing issues for those suffering from kidney disease (such as heart damage).
  • Energy: You can seriously boost your energy with hemp powder, thanks to the essential trio of magnesium, zinc, and iron. This combo is especially tricky to obtain in powders and naturally if you’re a veggie or vegan. But with hemp protein, you get 40% of iron, 60% of magnesium (hello!), and 25% of daily zinc requirements.

HEMP PROTEIN IS FOR ALL DIETS, FROM VEGANS TO THOSE WITH ALLERGIES

Okay, my last shout-out, I promise! Almost anyone can enjoy hemp protein powder, which isn’t always the case for other products. Because it’s plant-based, it’s suitable for vegans, vegetarians, or those with sensitivities to eggs or dairy. There are also many gluten-free and kosher options, and you can enjoy it even if you suffer from common food allergies like peanuts and soybeans.

7 BEST HEMP PROTEIN POWDER BRANDS

Now that you know all the hemp protein powder benefits, are you ready to start enjoying it? You can easily add this nutrient-packed powder by adding it to smoothies, baked goods, sauces, dips, soups, and, honestly, anything else you want! I’m a fan of hummus and guacamole with a little hemp protein sprinkled in.

To get started, check out my favorite hemp protein powder brands.

1. TERRASOUL HEMP PROTEIN POWDER

A photo of pure hemp protein powder from Terrasoul.

I’m a big fan of Terrasoul products anyway, but what I love about their hemp protein powder is that it’s organic, non-GMO, and completely clean. What you see is what you get! What frustrated me about protein powders, in general, were all the additives, so I like knowing this one is clean, pure, and with only one ingredient: hemp.

THE STATS

One serving size (1 tablespoon) gives you:

  • 3g of fiber
  • 5g of protein
  • 80mg of magnesium

PROS VS CONS

PROS: This is one of the cleanest and purest hemp powders you’re going to find! The company has a strict set of standards, so their products are high-quality. Plus, it’s cold-pressed without using chemicals.

CONS: Because it’s pure hemp, it’s not naturally water-soluble, so you can’t just mix and chug. Instead, this one blends best with smoothies, baked goods, or dips—something a bit denser.

2. NAVITAS 100% HEMP PROTEIN POWDER

A photo of hemp powder with hemp protein powder benefits listed on the packaging.

Another organic brand, Navitas is totally gluten-free and kosher! So truly, anyone can eat this hemp powder. It’s also cold-pressed, so it creates a fine, fluffy powder. And because of its consistency, you can actually substitute a portion of flour for this protein powder in recipes. It also features one single ingredient: hemp.

THE STATS

One serving size (4 tablespoons) gives you:

  • 7g of fiber
  • 13g of protein
  • 249 mg of magnesium
  • 7 mg of iron

PROS VS CONS

PROS: It’s kosher, vegan, gluten-free, organic, pure, etc. All the good words! It’s so fine that it blends in super well with smoothies, baked goods, and even stews or dips like hummus.

CONS: Again, not totally water-soluble, so it’s best to mix this one in with some denser food.

3. BOB’S RED MILL HEMP PROTEIN

A photo of Bob’s Red Mill hemp powder.

I don’t know about you, but Bob is a staple in my house. The amount of Bob’s Red Mill products I buy is borderline a problem—but they’re just so accessible and affordable! Plus, I love their no-nonsense reputation. That’s why I sometimes fall back on their hemp protein powder, which is vegan, non-GMO, paleo-friendly, and keto-friendly.

THE STATS

One serving size (¼ cup) gives you:

  • 11g of fiber
  • 12g of protein
  • 6 mg of iron

PROS VS CONS

PROS: This one’s great for blending! It mixes better than others, so it’s great to simply add to water or juices, then stir and drink. But it also works well as a flour substitute, in baked goods, or a smoothie.

CONS: The brand doesn’t specify if it’s dairy-free or gluten-free, nor include magnesium on its nutrition label.

4. NATURE’S WAY ORGANIC HEMP POWDER

A bottle of hemp protein powder next to a jar of coconut oil with two full spoons and sliced nuts.

Nature’s Way is a great choice for anyone looking to up their fiber intake alongside their protein! This mildly flavored organic hemp protein powder can be mixed into basically anything without throwing off the flavor, which is something I’m always looking for. Plus, it’s cold-milled and unrefined so you get the highest quality hemp protein powder possible. Score!

THE STATS

One serving size (4 tablespoons) gives you:

  • 11g of fiber
  • 11g of protein
  • 1.7g essential fatty acids
  • 1.3g omega 6 fatty acids

PROS VS CONS

PROS:This hemp powder is a great balance of protein and fiber with some extra beneficial fatty acids thrown in as well. It has a mild flavor, making it easy to mix into baked goods or beverages.

CONS: Contains lower levels of protein than other options on this list; more of a well-rounded supplement than an intensive protein powder.

WEBSITE

5. NUTIVA ORGANIC HEMP PROTEIN

A jar of Nutiva hemp powder sits next to another hemp product and a small bowl of hemp seeds.

Nutiva is a great brand overall, focusing on the details. Although most products include the usual hemp protein powder benefits, Nutiva makes them front and center. Their organic powder has nine essential amino acids, branched-chain amino acids, and 2g per serving of fatty acids. Another perk? It comes in chocolate and vanilla shake-mix flavors!

THE STATS

One serving size (4 tablespoons) gives you:

  • 6g of fiber
  • 15g of protein
  • 6 mg of iron
  • 246 mg of magnesium
  • 4 mg of zinc

PROS VS CONS

PROS: Although not as much as Hemp Yeah!, Nutiva is also protein-dense with 15g in each serving size. You have some fun options, too, such as high-fiber versions and hemp protein shake mixes in chocolate and vanilla flavors.

CONS: It’s best to mix it into smoothies or baked goods unless you use the flavored shake mixes.

WEBSITE

6. LEAN HEMP PROTEIN POWDER

Lean Hemp protein powder pouches sit atop hemp seeds next to fruit.

Lean Hemp focuses its plant-based protein powders on athletes, so it’s another protein-rich hemp powder. It’s organic, vegan, gluten-free, and GMO-certified. Despite having just one ingredient (hemp), it packs many benefits, such as amino acids, fatty acids, vitamin B6, vitamin E, calcium, and more.

THE STATS

One serving size (4 tablespoons) gives you:

  • 7g of fiber
  • 20g of protein
  • 60% daily value of iron
  • 300% daily value of magnesium
  • 50% daily value of zinc

PROS VS CONS

PROS: You get lots of protein and other beneficial nutrients despite using just raw, organic hemp. It’s pure and clean.

CONS: It’s only available through third-party websites unless you join their subscription service, which, to be fair, does offer its product at a slight discount.

WEBSITE

7. ALAYA PLANT PROTEIN BLEND

A flatlay of Alay Plant Based Protein beside green fruits and vegetables

I wanted to include Alaya’s plant-based protein powder on the list because it’s a great option if you’re looking for a blend. It’s not 100% hemp, though—it’s a mix of powder made from brown rice, hemp seeds, and peas. It also contains other ingredients to give you an even bigger nutritional boost and curb that hemp flavor. These additions include spirulina and organic flavors, so read the label carefully if you have any allergies or want to avoid certain ingredients.

THE STATS

One serving size (1 scoop (37g) gives you:

  • 5g of fiber
  • 23g of protein
  • 3 mg of iron
  • 31 mg of magnesium
  • 1 mg of zinc

PROS VS CONS

PROS: Because of the blend, you get a big dose of protein with every serving. It also has a more tolerable flavor (but no artificial ingredients) if you don’t like the pure hemp taste (cocoa, vanilla, coconut cream, etc.).

CONS: Although it’s packed with protein, it’s not as nutrient-dense in the other areas.
