If you’ve been searching for the perfect eco-friendly, hypoallergenic bedding fabric, hemp sheets are the cloud-like bedding of your dreams. Free of toxins, formaldehyde, and irritating dyes found in mainstream bedding, hemp sheets offer restful sleep that keeps you warm in the winter and cool in the summer. These luscious woven sheets are all made with low impact dyes and naturally antibacterial hemp fabric .
As hemp makes its comeback, new production practices for hemp in China have led to the softest, most luxurious, and accessible hemp fabrics in history. I checked out the top 13 best hemp sheets online to figure out which offer the dreamiest eco-friendly bedding without the allergens or chemicals I’ve found in mainstream sheets.
WHY CHOOSE HEMP SHEETS?
You may know hemp for CBD, hemp seeds, or its intoxicating cousin, marijuana. But hemp has also been cultivated for fiber for thousands of years. Even the first American flag was made of hemp fiber !
Most sheets are made of synthetic polyester or cotton. When it comes to hemp vs cotton , hemp requires less water, no chemicals, and less land than its cotton counterparts. It is among the most sustainable fabrics available to eco-conscious consumers who are concerned about the health of the environment as well as their families.
HEMP SHEETS ARE NON-TOXIC AND HYPOALLERGENIC
Anyone with allergies, asthma, or chemical sensitivities knows how hard it is to sleep with toxic synthetic bedding. Hemp is completely hypoallergenic, meaning it won’t trigger allergic reactions or inflammation in children or sensitive sleepers.
Most people don’t realize how many chemicals are laced into conventional sheets: formaldehyde, synthetic dyes, resins, and even fumigants. No thanks! Hemp bedding is a 100% natural fiber and renewable resource.
HEMP IS BREATHABLE AND TEMPERATURE-REGULATING
Do you hate being too hot or too cold during the night? Hemp is an extraordinarily breathable fabric that allows you to rest comfortably without feeling sweaty or muggy. Perfect for all seasons, hemp sheets are especially great at regulating your temperature as you sleep.
This is also one of the reasons why hemp makes such an excellent textile for breathable underwear and clothing: it lets your skin breathe the way nature intended!
HEMP FABRIC IS MADE FROM 100% NATURAL FIBERS
Hemp fiber comes directly from the Cannabis sativa plant, but it’s grown very differently from its cousin marijuana. The fibrous stalks grow tall and dense for extra durable long fibers to be sewn into fabric. The result is completely biodegradable sheets made the way nature intended: no synthetics, no harsh chemicals, no BS.
While cotton is a natural fiber, hemp beats it on just about every front. Conventional cotton is one of the most pesticide-laden crops on the planet and after harvest it’s often bleached, fumigated, and treated with flame retardants. You definitely don’t want to smother your face and skin into that! When you compare organic cotton vs. cotton , you find that organic cotton is still a great natural fiber option, however it doesn’t measure up to the thermoregulating properties and sustainable production of hemp.
HEMP IS ECO-FRIENDLY
With global climate change, plastic pollution, and toxic chemicals inundating us with bad news from every angle, hemp is the pure, eco-friendly good news we could all use. Because it is a bioremediator plant, growing hemp actually improves the soil over time. It also requires no herbicides or pesticides thanks to its vigorous growth and resilient genetics.
HOW TO CHOOSE THE BEST HEMP SHEETS
Despite its ancient uses, hemp fabric is relatively new to the bedding scene. That means it can be pretty expensive and I’m sure you want to get the most bang for your buck while investing in this luscious eco-bedding.
While you’re shopping for the best hemp sheets on the market, be sure to answer these questions before you buy:
1. HOW WERE THEY MADE?
You’ll want to be sure that a company thoroughly screens its factories to ensure workers are treated fairly and the fabrics are processed without synthetic chemicals. China actually leads the world in sustainable hemp production and many companies have done their due diligence to ensure environmentally-sound and super ethical practices in their factories.
2. DOES THE PRODUCT HAVE ANY CERTIFICATIONS?
If you want to make sure you’re getting the highest quality hemp sheets you can, look for ones that meet the OEKO-TEX Standard 100 . It’s a certification that prohibits use of formaldehyde and other nasty chemicals, while ensuring textiles are health-tested and sustainably produced. Unlike other fabrics, hemp cannot be GOTS certified .
3. IS IT A FABRIC BLEND?
Many hemp sheets are not 100% pure hemp and may be blended with other fabrics. Organic cotton is a lovely comrade that’s often woven into hemp sheets to make them more affordable. Flax linen may also be incorporated.
If you dig into the blend and realize it's mixed with low-quality polyester or other synthetic fabrics, look for another brand. Greenwashing is pretty common in the hemp space because a lot of companies don’t want to pay the price for higher quality fabrics like hemp. Instead, they sneak them into blends and advertise them as “hemp sheets”. In reality, they’re probably only using small amounts of hemp for marketing purposes and the bedding will not perform the same. Pure hemp fabric will always be best!

HOW TO CARE FOR HEMP BEDDING
When I first tried out hemp, I was scared that it would take some special washing process to take care of it. Nope! It’s actually super simple to care for hemp sheets. Hemp itself is so durable that it was used to make ropes and sails on old ships, so you don’t have to worry about hand washing or dry cleaning.
Of course, the hemp used to make your bedding is far softer and more pliable. Still, with proper care, hemp sheets can last a very long time. To clean your hemp sheets, follow these simple steps:
- Wash hemp sheets in cold or warm water with a gentle biodegradable detergent (unless stained).
- For stains, use a natural detergent and presoak in warmer water.
- Separate darks from lighter colors.
- Use a cup of white vinegar at the end of the wash to ensure the soap has been fully removed from the fabric and it will be left soft and smelling fresh.
- Avoid dry cleaning.
- Machine-dry hemp fabrics on a low, gentle spin or hang to air dry.
- Remove from the dryer right away to prevent wrinkling.
SLEEP WELL!
It’s time you upgraded to the most sustainable and eco-luxe bedding around. No more sweating, allergies, or synthetic fabrics. I know from experience that investing in hemp sheets can transform mediocre sleep into restorative beauty rest. You deserve it!
